Everybody's Buddy

The word that best describes Spike is "galoot."  He's amiable, affable and always willing to meet new people and go new places.

One Foot Tall and Bulletproof

He is, however, a fierce defender of his home turf.  Sort of.  If you're on the other side of the door or fence, he'll let you know just how tough he is.  Open the door and he's your instant pal.  This is not a contradiction in any way; he is large, he contains multitudes.

Gentleman Hobbyist

Spike has his passions.  Naps, for instance.  Snacking is a favorite.  Exchanging yarks with Otis the German Shepherd is another.

The Ladies' Man

Spike is handsome, charming and has breath that would kill a buzzard.  Is it any wonder the ladies love him?  Of course, there was that one time when David turned the tables on him.  Spike wisely decided that discretion was the better part of valor and ran to mommy for help.

A Perfect Gentleman

In addition to being a gentle soul, Spike is a natural gentleman.  When going for walkies, he always allows the guest to precede him.  (Unless his tootsies are getting wet in the dewy grass, of course, then it's every creature for himself!  But that's certainly an understandable exception.)  He knows the concept of taking turns, and even obeys the command of "sit" nearly 3 times out of every 5.

The Term is "Stocky"

Built like a pro linebacker, Spike is never one to miss a meal.  But when you consider that he and his sister Tiggy eat the same amount of food each day and he checks in at a hefty 24 pounds while she is a svelte 15, it's clear that genetics are at work

The Spikemeister once weighed an astonishing 32 pounds.  One can only assume that he misread the Pug breed standard - instead of reading "14 to 18 pounds," he read it as "14 and 18 pounds."

After a serious diet and added exercise, he shed nearly a third of his mass.  Used to hauling an extra 10 pounds around, he was suddenly overpowered.  Pre-diet he could barely climb onto his chair; post-diet he was leaping so powerfully that he crashed into the back of the lounger.  He began to strut, and rightly so.  He even got on TV.
